The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a stern warning to Nigerian students on F-1 visas, cautioning that academic violations such as skipping classes or dropping out without notifying their schools could lead to visa revocation. The advisory, shared on the mission’s official X handle on Monday, underscores the importance of adhering to visa regulations to maintain legal status in the US. This move highlights growing concerns over compliance among international students.

The US Mission emphasised that failure to maintain academic status could have severe consequences, including ineligibility for future US visas. The statement specifically targeted Nigerian students, who form one of the largest groups of international students in the US, with over 17,000 enrolled in 2024. The warning comes amid increased scrutiny of visa compliance as the US seeks to ensure students meet the academic requirements tied to their F-1 visas.

“If you drop out, skip classes, or leave your programmes of study without informing your school, your student visa may be revoked, and you may lose eligibility for future US visas,” the mission stated. It urged students to strictly follow visa terms and maintain consistent academic engagement to avoid immigration issues. The US Embassy in Nigeria clarified that students must notify their Designated School Officials (DSOs) of any changes in their academic status. This includes dropping below a full course load or withdrawing from a programme. Failure to report such changes can trigger a violation in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), potentially leading to immediate visa termination and deportation.

This warning aligns with broader US immigration policies aimed at ensuring compliance among international students.
